NewsFilm Online is a collection of over 3,000 hours of digitised news stories which lets users see and hear the events that shaped the 20th and 21st centuries. Funded by JISC, content is free to subscribers until July 2012 and is suitable for all academic levels.
NewsFilm Online is a collection of over 3,000 hours of television news and cinema newsreels taken from the ITN/Reuters archive. Delivered online in high quality format, this resource is a gateway of unmatched richness to one hundred years of news.
Users can watch and download over 50,000 clips, including significant historical events such as the Crystal Palace fire, the first interview with Nelson Mandela, and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
In addition to the video clips, resources such as running orders and scripts, images, background on news footage, and learning and teaching tools are available.
Footage from NewsFilm Online falls into three categories.
Television news
- Channel 4 News : daily bulletins on current events from 1982 to the present
- Channel 5 News : from 1997 to christmas 2004
- ITN : content from clip reels, collections, reports, rushes, specials, and open-enders
- ITV News : daily bulletins on current events from 1955 to the present
- Roving Reports : weekly news documentary films from 1957 to 1967
Cinema newsreels
- British Paramount : newsreels from 1931 to 1957
- Empire News : newsreels, human interest stories, and sports events from 1926 to 1930
- Gaumont British : newsreels from 1934 to 1959
- Gaumont Graphic: silent newsreels from 1910 to 1932
- Universal News : newsreels from 1930 to 1956
Press agency newsfeeds
- Visnews : newsfeeds from 1957 to 1992
- Reuters Television : newsfeeds from 1993 to the present
